Mastiek is de hars die afkomstig is van de mastiekboom Pistacia lentiscus. De hars werd in de schilderkunst vroeger veel gebruikt als vernis in de olieverftechniek, maar is tegenwoordig grotendeels vervangen door vernissen die niet na-gelen.

A natural resin which exudes either naturally or from wounds in the “Pistacia Lentiscus” which grows in the Greek isle of Chios. Gum Mastic occurs as rounded tears of transparent, glossy, light yellow colour; it softens around 80°C and melts between 105°C and 120°C. It is insoluble in water and soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons, turpentine oil and partially in alcohol. Owing to its properties of transparency and brightness it is commonly used as a picture varnish.
