Beschrijving

Bariumhydroxide is een bariumzout met als brutoformule Ba(OH)2. Een oplossing van deze stof in water wordt ook wel barietwater genoemd. In de meeste gevallen komt het als octahydraat voor.

Barium Hydrate octahydrate is widely used as a consolidant for plasters and wall paintings. Barium Hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form Barium Carbonate, a salt almost insoluble in water, which gives the consolidating effect. Besides, it reacts with Calcium Sulphate (CaSO4) wich is present on frescoes as an efflorescence to form Barium Sulphate (BaSO4), an extremely insoluble salt.
