A natural resin that exudes either naturally or from wounds in various species of North African and Spanish Coniferae. It occurs as regular light yellow pieces. It is soluble in alcohols, ketones, ether and insoluble in aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Gum Sandarac gives hard and brittle films; it is used for the formulation of varnishes in combination with other resins.
